The research activities of the Structural Mechanics Group at the University of Ferrara focus on the development of advanced analytical models, innovative numerical methods, and computational solutions applied to structural engineering, advanced materials, and mechanobiology.
In particular, the main research areas include:
Extended Virtual Element Method (eVEM) and discrete VEM models for advanced structural applications
XFEM
Modelling of discontinuities and interfaces via advanced FEM methods (XFEM), with applications to the failure of concrete, steel, timber, and timber-steel structures
Mechanobiology
Study of the mechanobiology of interactions among cells, tissues, and the extracellular matrix (ECM), through the integration of tensegrity and FEM models
FGT
Non-local elasticity applied to carbon nanotubes (CNTs), along with the development of algorithms for the numerical acceleration of non-local interactions based on the Fast Gauss Transform (FGT)
Multi-risk analysis of combined territorial hazards, Big Data optimization techniques for civil engineering, and structural risk assessment related to climate change;
Application of advanced tensor methods for linear elasticity, based on the use of Tensor Train (TT) and Quantized Tensor Train (QTT) formats
CutFEM
Advanced computational approaches based on the CutFEM method applied to the study of tumor invasion processes
Advanced Modelling
Development of non-local damage models and multi-surface damage and plasticity models for timber and timber-steel composite systems
